About Camp Thunderbird
Camp Thunderbird is a YMCA/YWCA Summer camp. It has accommodations & cafeteria, walking trails and most importantly Glintz Lake.
There are specific rules that must be followed by everyone in the sake of safety, mainly about food and wilderness interaction. We require you to be aware of the rules and follow them at all times.
- NO food is permitted in cabins/yurts as this will attract wildlife (mice!)
- This is a dry venue, so NO ALCOHOL or OTHER INTOXICANTS on the premises.
- Please dispose all garbage or other items in the dining hall.

Camp Thunderbird is located here in the in the foothills of the island near Sooke. This location is a short drive from Victoria. See transportation (below) for details on getting to the camp.
It is highly recommended that participants stay on site for the tournament. This allows you to relax and enjoy the experience; avoiding eating out and driving during the weekend.
Note that there is a sauna onsite right beside the pitch.
Please indicate in your registration if you would like to book a private building for a family or a team and who will be staying with you. VIKP will confirm these requests and follow up with you after registration.
If you choose to stay off-site, you will need to complete a separate accommodations registration and must ensure that VIKP knows when you are on and off site as part of our safety plan.
There are 5 on-site cabins available for our use, which can be reserved for families, teams, or individuals. Cabins are heated, have electricity, washrooms, and 12 twin size beds (6 bunks).
We will do our best to put players coming from the same team or region together in cabins. Cabins are mixed gender at this time, please contact us if you have any issues or concerns.

Yurts are also available for slightly more “private” accommodations to be booked as a group. Yurts do not have washrooms inside, there is a separate building with showers and washrooms nearby. Yurts will be reserved on a first come first served basis, as there are a limited number available.

Meals are provided by Camp Thunderbird either as family table service or from a buffet.
Meal service runs over an extended period of time to allow those playing to get food before or after a match.
Please indicate dietary restrictions and allergies in your registration, as the camp has extensive experience in accommodating these requests in a professional manner.
NO food is permitted in cabins/yurts as this will attract wildlife (mice!)
You are welcome to store food in your vehicle, but be aware that bears are in the area and they may decide to open your car causing significant damage!
Please be bear/cougar aware when disposing of food and garbage.
Camp Thunderbird is an approximately 75 minute drive from the Victoria airport (YYJ). Public transportation is available from downtown Victoria to the junction of Highway 14 and Glinz Lake road.
Airport and ferry shuttles can be pre-arranged for those arriving without vehicles. Last minute arrangements are unavailable, save for emergency situations. Please indicate in your registration if you will need an airport/ferry shuttle.
If you are traveling to Vancouver Island by ferry, it is advised that you pre-book in advance as weekends have very high demand. Ferry reservations arriving from mainland BC can be made through BC Ferries. Ferry reservations from the US can be booked with the Black Ball Ferry Line.
Each attendee should bring a sleeping bag, pillow, towel, personal toiletries, and a flashlight/headlight. Camping chairs are encouraged for spectating.
While temperatures in the Victoria area are quite pleasant at this time of year, realize that we will be outside in the foothills. Temperatures range from 6°C to 25°C ( 43°F to 75°F ) and light rain is a possibility, so bring clothing that can be layered and please avoid cotton.
Bring whatever personal paddling clothing you are comfortable in. Thermal wear is highly recommended the lake can be quite cold in May. Neoprene shorts are always in fashion at the tournament. 🙂
Note there is a sauna onsite right beside the pitch which is available for our use to warm up before, between and after games.
